Ship autopilot steers during evasive manoeuvres and docking

Demo: control room for an autonomous ship. Credit: Technical Research Centre of Finland (VTT) VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland is developing safe steering for the remote-monitored and controlled autonomous ships of the future. The new technology has been developed for navigation systems and ship autopilots, which steer ships automatically. The ships of the future will largely be controlled by artificial intelligence. However, these autonomous unmanned vessels must be monitored and controlled on demand by land-based professionals. This trend sets…

How to grow a structure using ‘mushroom sausages’

Credit: Brunel University A Brunel University London student has been exploring how mushrooms can be used to grow robust zero-waste structures as an alternative to conventional building techniques. In collaboration with environmentally-focused architecture firm Astudio, Aleksi Vesaluoma’s Grown Structures, use mycelium (oyster mushroom spawn) mixed with cardboard. The material is then molded into ‘mushroom sausages’ by packing the mixture into a tubular cotton bandage. The mushroom sausages are shaped over a mold of the preferred shape and grown over…

Watching cities grow—New algorithms for evaluating satellite data

Using the new satellite tomography, researchers can map the city of Berlin in 3-D and deformation and subsidence down to the millimeter. Credit: DLR & TUM Three million measurement points in one square kilometer: Prof. Xiaoxiang Zhu and her team have set a world record in information retrieval from satellite data. Thanks to new algorithms, the researchers from the Technical University of Munich (TUM) succeeded in making four-dimensional point clouds of Berlin, Las Vegas, Paris and Washington, D.C. from images…

Emoji in the editor! 🍾 🙌 🎉 – Medium Engineering

Last week I was blocked on product development, so I added an :emoji: typeahead to the Medium editor, because I was tired of ^⌘[space]ing. 🙅🕒 Try it out! Type a colon, followed by the name of your favorite emoji into any Medium post. (Here’s a cheat sheet.) Context We already implicitly allow emoji in the editor. We even gracefully handle multi-character emoji like 👨‍👩‍👦‍👦 and 🇦🇺 when you backspace and arrow around. Which… git blame → Nick Santos, obviously. 🙏 The…

It is intended for the layman who is interested in New Age topics, metaphysics, and spirituality. This is the first of four intended to provide background information that can serve as a bridge between modern physics and ancient metaphysics. The second article concerns…

New method for 3-D through-wall imaging that utilizes drones and WiFi

Researchers at UC Santa Barbara professor Yasamin Mostofi’s lab have given the first demonstration of three-dimensional imaging of objects through walls using ordinary wireless signal. The technique, which involves two drones working in tandem, could have a variety of applications, such as emergency search-and-rescue, archaeological discovery and structural monitoring. “Our proposed approach has enabled unmanned aerial vehicles to image details through walls in 3D with only WiFi signals,” said Mostofi, a professor of electrical and computer engineering at UCSB. “This…

The @Scale community is focused on bringing…

Evolution of Dropbox’s Edge Network

Since launching Magic Pocket last year, we’ve been storing and serving more than 90 percent of our users’ data on our own custom-built infrastructure, which has helped us to be more efficient and improved performance for our users globally. But with about 75 percent of our users located outside of the United States, moving onto our own custom-built data center was just the first step in realizing these benefits. As our data centers grew, the rest of our network also…
