Prasad Calyam, assistant professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, recently completed a trip to India, where he gave a presentation on cyber defense of distributed denial of service attacks on cloud computing systems at the 19th annual ACM International Conference on Distributed Computing and Networking. While there, he also visited Amrita University, where he gave presentations on technology and innovation with the goal of showcasing Mizzou Engineering’s strengths in these areas to a strong partner institution.
“Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed my visit to Amrita University, and had a great set of experiences with the faculty, students and administrators. Plus, the location of the university is just wonderful in terms of natural beauty – backwaters and beaches!,” Calyam said.
At Amrita, he visited the Cochin campus, which focuses on medical education and research, and the Amritapuri campus, which focuses on education and research into Big Data, cyber security, engineering and more. One of the main goals of his visit was to showcase Mizzou to potential doctoral students with interests in these areas, which align with MU Engineering’s pillars of Big Data Analytics, Biomedical Innovations and Sustainability inFEWSed (Food, Energy, Water, Smart Cities). The visit also served to highlight Amrita’s strengths for potential Mizzou students who may want to utilize Amrita for Study Abroad programs or graduate studies.
“At the Amritapuri campus, I was provided an opportunity to address more than 200 graduate students and discuss applying for our master’s and Ph.D. programs in the College. Many students are already actively working on exciting research projects and are getting the preparation to succeed in graduate schools in the U.S.,” he explained.
He also had the opportunity to learn more about Amrita’s Live-In-Labs program, which places students in rural areas in India so they can work to develop sustainable solutions to the area’s current challenges.
“The Amrita University faculty are working on cutting-edge use-inspired research problems in Big Data, cyber security, wireless networking, sensor systems, smart energy and energy sub areas, and the Live-in Labs program is closely aligned with those project groups,” Calyam said.
