A First-Timer’s Insights from 2016 ISTA TransPack Forum

by Samuel Huppert, Packaging Engineer, Packaging Optimization, Chainalytics I am a young packaging professional and always looking for opportunities to learn and grow as an engineer. I was pleased to find that the 2016 ISTA TransPack Forum provided ample opportunity for me to further my professional development: Networking opportunities, from the welcome and exhibitor reception, volleyball tournament, to meals, allowed me to meet a broad range of people in the packaging industry. Attendees ranged from packaging lab technicians to packaging…

From App Academy to Engineer at Zenefits – Zenefits Engineering

Most people know that Zenefits Engineering is bursting with talent, but you may not know what daily life is like as an engineer at Zenefits. Today’s post is the first in a series of personal stories written by our engineers to highlight who they are, how each of them got here, and their perspective on being part of the Zenefits engineering team. To kick us off, Brian McGue tells his story that begins with the coding bootcamp App Academy where…

Introducing Elex, a Tool to Make Election Coverage Better for Everyone – Features

“End the elections arms race” has become a rallying cry in American data journalism. Many newsrooms spend tremendous resources writing code to simply load and parse election data. It’s time we stopped worrying about the plumbing and started competing on the interesting parts. We decided it was time we put some code against our beliefs – our contribution is a tool we’re calling Elex. What Is It? Elex is a command-line tool to get election results from the Associated Press Election API…

The Pympocalypse

Everything was going so well. We finally had a solution for embedding responsive charts inside our CMS. We called it pym.js. We had built a framework around it, the dailygraphics rig, and when that worked for us we shared it with the world. It even worked for member stations. Then there came unexpected implication was something was very wrong. It first manifested in a ticket numbered 97. We took it as nothing important at first. But soon that number was…

How to apply to an internship at NPR Visuals

We want to see your best work. Here’s how. Cover letters All candidates must submit a cover letter. Your cover letter should be a statement of purpose. We’re interested in what you’re passionate about and why you’re passionate about it. (Most cover letters tell us that you are hardworking, passionate and talented, etc. And that you love NPR. What’s new in our first release version of the dailygraphics rig?

Our dailygraphics rig has been around for more than a year and in that time we’ve used it to make hundreds of responsive rectangles of good internet, but we’ve never made it easy for others to use. The rig is heavily customized for our needs and includes our organization-specific styles and templates. Despite this, a handful of hardy news organizations have made efforts to adopt it. In order to better facilitate this, today we are releasing our first fixed “version”…

Google Trends : Concrete vs. Steel

I revisited an interesting (and free) tool on the internet called Google Trends.  It allows the user to “explore Google trending search topics.”  Since this is a construction-related blog, I decided to run explore the topics of “Concrete,” “Steel” and “Construction.”  After all, post-tensioning is a combination of high-strength steel and concrete. All graphs are based on a query run from January 2011 to January 2015 within the United States – Business & Industrial topics.  However, queries can be run starting…

The case of the “Page can’t be displayed” intermittent selenium test

IMVU relies heavily on unit testing with dependency injection for most of the testing of its website code written in PHP. Unit testing is great because it can be crafted in such a way that it will (hopefully) only test the things you’re interested in testing to verify the behavior of a particular component. This ideally makes unit tests both fast and reliable. However, it’s possible to write unit that all pass, but that fail to catch an incompatibility between…

Putting Radio On The Television

For election night 2014, we wanted to do something different. We guessed that the dedicated wonks — the ones who want to drill down into detailed data and maps — would probably go to sources like the New York Times or Washington Post. Rather than reproduce that work, what could NPR do that would be unique, and would serve a broader audience? To start, we had our organization’s thoughtful reporting and on-air coverage — a live event we could build something…
