Preparing to Celebrate Women in Tech at GHC ’17

I’ve been in the technology industry for 17 years and consider my attendance at the Grace Hopper Celebration of Women in Computing as one of the most powerful experiences of my career—and one of the most fulfilling. I’m looking forward to experiencing the celebration again this year with an amazing group of engineers from LinkedIn. It’s also a moment to reflect on the impact this event can have. Last year, while spending time in the LinkedIn booth at the GHC…

Geo Key Manager: How It Works

Today we announced Geo Key Manager, a feature that gives customers unprecedented control over where their private keys are stored when uploaded to Cloudflare. This feature builds on a previous Cloudflare innovation called Keyless SSL and a novel cryptographic access control mechanism based on both identity-based encryption and broadcast encryption. In this post we’ll explain the technical details of this feature, the first of its kind in the industry, and how Cloudflare leveraged its existing network and technologies to build…

Meet Gatebot – a bot that allows us to sleep

In the past, we’ve spoken about how Cloudflare is architected to sustain the largest DDoS attacks. During traffic surges we spread the traffic across a very large number of edge servers. This architecture allows us to avoid having a single choke point because the traffic gets distributed externally across multiple datacenters and internally across multiple servers. We do that by employing Anycast and ECMP. We don’t use separate scrubbing boxes or specialized hardware – every one of our edge servers…

Computer-Aided Design: How It Improves Safety in Engineering

Computer-aided design or CAD has been a critical component in engineering for many years, especially in developing construction plans and in creating 3D models of devices, machinery, and infrastructure. More than designs and models, however, CAD is also an important tool in improving safety in the actual profession and, in turn, the products that they build. Modeling, Simulation, and Analysis CAD helps designers create more accurate drawings and models, down to the smallest nuts and rivets. Being able to visualize…

Hurricanes Propel Forward Thinking on Risk, Resilience

Hurricanes Propel Forward Thinking on Risk, Resilience: Even as hard-hit areas of two of the country’s most developed regions push for normalcy after back-to-back hurricanes in early September, policymakers and construction industry experts are weighing the longer-term implications of the damage in Houston, Florida and the Caribbean from Harvey and Irma—and how and whether infrastructure resiliency can be accelerated and how that will affect coastal development. Project Jengo Strikes Its First Targets (and Looks for More)

Jango Fett by Brickset (Flickr) When Blackbird Tech, a notorious patent troll, sued us earlier this year for patent infringement, we discovered quickly that the folks at Blackbird were engaged in what appeared to be the broad and unsubstantiated assertion of patents — filing about 115 lawsuits in less than 3 years, and have not yet won a single one of those cases on the merits in court. Cloudflare felt an appropriate response would be to review all of Blackbird…

Nevada experiment mimics earthquakes to test bridge designs

A day after a deadly earthquake struck Mexico City, University of Nevada scientists will mimic quakes to test new bridge designs developed to help the structures better withstand violent temblors. The engineers on Wednesday will rattle a 100-ton, 70-foot (21-meter) bridge model to see how it holds up on a giant contraption in a Reno seismology lab called a “shake table.” Some design work by the engineers has been incorporated into a highway off-ramp under construction in Seattle. It…

Scaling Event Sourcing for Netflix Downloads, Episode 2

by Karen Casella, Phillipa Avery, Robert Reta, Joseph Breuer In the first episode of this series of posts, we introduced the Netflix downloads project and the use cases that led us to consider a solution based on the event sourcing pattern. In this post, we provide an overview of the general event sourcing pattern and how we applied it to some of these key use cases. A Flexible Dilemma When we first started to design the downloads licensing service, the content…

Infrastructure update: evolution of the Dropbox backbone network

Dropbox global backbone network topology In our previous post, we provided an overview of the global edge network that we deployed to improve performance for our users around the world. We built this edge network over the last two years as part of a strategy to deliver the benefits of Magic Pocket. Alongside our edge network, we launched a global backbone network that connects our data centers in North America not only to each other, but also to the edge…
